K-12 Education:
Being the lowest in funding for K-12 education is not something I point to with pride but I do not believe it is in itself is an argument for greater funding. My put is that if funding level is the sole benchmark I think we are focusing on the wrong metrics with respect to education. Being at the bottom of funding is a symptom of a lack of vision and accountability. We should be establishing a discussion regarding education that fits in a broader context of quality of life, a comprehensive education strategy, our overall economic competitiveness, and ability to attract talent to our state rather than being a net exporter of talent. By focusing on the success of our children, that is; the accomplishments of our students as measured by; their academic progression and national and international standards, we can put in place policies that create a level playing field for public and private schools and let innovation flourish. This will allow us to raise the bar for the teachers, facilities and technology infrastructure needed in partnership with the business community, being a state that is simultaneously recognized for workforce innovation and education excellence. We need a vision of excellence and growth not austerity.
